Haro—the centre of the wine culture in the Rioja

If La Rioja is the red wine valley, Haro is the centre of the wine culture. There are more than 20 wineries to visit within the city of Haro and hundreds more located just beyond its boundaries. You can also visit the museum, not just any museum but—you guessed it—a wine museum.  If you are in town in June you can take in the wine festival, which involves people throwing buckets of the red stuff at each other.

Or you could simply see the sights of Haro—wandering through its streets is like walking through an open-air museum.  Discover how wine made the region what it is today.

The walled city of Laguardia gives you vistas of the entire Rioja Valley

Laguardia is a walled city originally built as a military fortress in the 10th century. Tunnels were constructed under the town to protect the townspeople during battles and give them an escape route onto the hillside.

Centuries later, when the military threats were no longer present inhabitants discovered that the temperature in the tunnels was perfect for storing wine.  The tunnels are still in use today, many by private residence but some are open to the public for tours.

If the uniqueness of the history of the town isn’t enough to entice you, the quaintness of the town itself will. It is by far the most picturesque of all the villages in the area. As it is on a hilltop you will get stunning views of vineyards sweeping across the valley floor and reaching up to the foothills of the mountains towering at the edge of the valley in a distance. Laguardia is made up of a maze of narrow streets with fascinating little nooks and corners.
